Cakes & Coffee: A Small Sweet Tradition Behind Every Great Coffee Break
From Paris café culture
to modern London coffeeshops
The pairing of cakes and coffee feels completely natural today. Walk into almost any coffeeshop and you’ll see desserts sitting next to espresso, cappuccino, and latte on the menu. This combination didn’t appear by chance; the habit of enjoying coffee with something sweet grew out of European café culture and still shapes how coffee shops, including us, design menus today. Our based city, London is now giving this tradition a modern twist for a new generation of coffee drinkers.
A French Café Ritual: Where Coffee Met Dessert
Coffee became part of everyday social life in Paris cafés in the late 17th century. One of the most famous examples, Café Procope, opened in 1686 and quickly became a meeting place for writers, philosophers, and merchants who ruled the city back then.
These cafés weren’t just places to drink coffee. They were social hubs where people exchanged ideas, debated politics, and spent long afternoons talking. Coffee was rarely served on its own; pastries and small sweets were almost always part of the moment.
A modern version of this tradition appeared much later with café gourmand, popularised in France in the late 20th century. The concept is simple: an espresso served with several miniature desserts on one plate — a small tasting experience designed to complement the coffee.
From Paris to London: How the Tradition Evolved
Fast forward to today, London has become one of Europe’s most dynamic specialty coffee consumer markets. Desserts remain a key part of the café experience. According to the Allegra World Coffee Portal UK Coffee Report, more than 60% of specialty coffee customers purchase food with their drink, with cakes and pastries among the most popular choices.
At the same time, customer preferences are changing. Modern café desserts increasingly focus on:
smaller portions
lighter textures
balanced sweetness
visually distinctive presentation
Instead of heavy traditional cakes, many cafés now offer desserts designed specifically to complement coffee.
Our Take on Cakes & Coffee at X° Robusta
At X° Robusta, we see desserts as part of the overall coffee experience, not just an extra item on the menu.
Inspired by the long tradition of cakes and coffee, we design our desserts to pair naturally with specialty coffee while fitting the rhythm of modern London life. This is especially true in busy districts like Canary Wharf, where coffee breaks are often short but meaningful.
For us, the idea is simple: desserts should enhance the coffee, not overpower it. When the balance is right, even a quick coffee break can feel like a small pause in the middle of a busy day.
As we are preparing for the launch of our coffee shop in Canary Wharf, this centuries-old café tradition continues, reinterpreted for today’s London coffee scene.
Stay tuned for our grand opening.
