Coffee Loves Milk. People Love Choice.

Why the UK prefers lattes and flat whites, while Asian markets lean towards Americano

In the UK, coffee is rarely just coffee. It’s softer, creamier, more layered,  and almost always made with milk. In many Asian markets, the picture is different. In South Korea, for example, Americano is one of the most common everyday choices. Similar product. Different habits.

Two markets, two coffee styles

The UK is, fundamentally, a milk-coffee market. According to the coffee habits research, 62% of people here prefer milk-based drinks like lattes, cappuccinos and flat whites.

These drinks shape what everyday coffee looks like: softer, more balanced, easier to come back to throughout the day. That preference also reflects the UK’s broader drinking culture, where tea with milk has long been part of everyday routines.

In contrast, many Asian markets lean towards black coffee. In South Korea, Americano has become one of the most widely consumed formats, often chosen for its lighter feel and clarity. That preference connects to existing drinking habits shaped by tea culture, where clarity and clean flavour matter. It also fits growing health-conscious habits, with many consumers preferring a lighter, lower-calorie option for everyday drinking.

So while the UK leans towards smooth, milk-led drinks, markets like Korea lean towards clarity.

Milk is no longer just an add-on

Not long ago, the choice was simple: whole milk for a richer, creamier feel, or semi-skimmed for something lighter. Today, it’s a completely different picture. People are choosing from a wide range of options: oat, almond, soy, coconut, hazelnut — and more niche alternatives like pea milk. What used to be a small detail is now part of the order.

The UK has seen a strong shift toward plant-based milk. Oat milk now leads coffee orders in many coffee shops, reaching over 50% share in some segments. More broadly, around one in three UK consumers use plant-based milk.

Milk is no longer just something you add at the end. It’s part of how the drink is built.

The beans shape the cup

The difference between milk-based drinks and Americano always starts with the beans. For milk-based drinks, roasters tend to favour profiles that stay strong through milk: chocolatey, nutty, slightly sweet.

For Americano, the approach is different. Lighter roasts and fruit-forward profiles are more common: brighter, cleaner, more transparent. That’s why the same coffee can feel completely different depending on how it’s built.

For some, it’s about what feels right: avoiding lactose or choosing something lighter. For others, it’s about having more control over their daily coffee. A variety of options makes that easy. Same drink, just adapted to you.

Built Around Balance at X° Robusta

Milk-based drinks and Americano aren’t just different formats. They’re built differently: from the beans to how the drink comes together in the cup. At X° Robusta, we look at both — how coffee works on its own, and how it works with milk. In the end, it’s about how everything comes together, and what works for you personally.
